Drug-driving epidemic worse than thought

New research suggests New Zealand's drug-driving epidemic may be worse than officials thought. An online survey of 1200 Kiwi drug users shows one in four drove after taking cannabis in the last year, while 21 per cent admitted drink driving. The Drug Foundation survey has top officials worried.

Dob in a dope grower key to clean-up for Northland

Nearly half the national cannabis crop destroyed during annual raids this season was hauled out of Northland. And police are now putting those involved in the cannabis trade on notice by encouraging people to clean up their communities and "dob in a dope grower".

People who drive while high on drugs think they are bulletproof, Transport Minister Steven Joyce says. In survey of 1200 New Zealanders by the Drug Foundation, 24.5 per cent said they had driven after taking cannabis in the last year.

Aussie schools struggle with pre-teen drug dealers

The scourge of drug dealing in Australian schools is now reaching primary students, some as young as eight. A new report has revealed nearly two dozen young children from New South Wales were suspended last year for drug offences and several have needed hospital treatment Children are being caught dealing or in possession of cannabis, ecstasy and speed.

Free holidays in exchange for smoke smuggling

LONDON - Cigarette smuggling into Britain is becoming so lucrative that growing numbers of young women are being offered free summer holidays by criminals in return for trafficking tobacco. UK border officials are seizing almost 50 million contraband cigarettes a month, and evidence has emerged that smuggling syndicates are bribing girls as young as 15 with flights to Spain, accommodation and pocket money.

Cannabis haul highest in a decade

The number of cannabis plants destroyed by police has hit a 10-year high. In the 2008/2009 year police seized 141,000 plants with the potential to cause community harm worth $379 million. Police arrested 1125 offenders, seized 191 firearms and recovered stolen property worth $400,000.

Drink-driving limits 'ridiculous' - minister

Motorists have been given a strong lead that tougher drink-driving laws are on the way. Transport Minister Steven Joyce yesterday described existing legal alcohol limits for driver as "ridiculous". Speaking to a conference of traffic experts in Auckland, Mr Joyce said he could drink three-quarters of a bottle of wine in 90 minutes yet still have every chance of being under the legal alcohol limit for adult drivers.

Drugs and guns seized in major police bust

Police today sounded an alarm about firearms in the drug trade after a number of guns were seized by Waikato police in a drug operation. Several people face dozens of charges after an eight-month operation came to a climax yesterday.

Customs seizes $7m of P

9th September 2009
A customs operation in Auckland has seized $7 million worth of methamphetamine, or P, in its last two weeks. The New Zealand Customs Service had been targeting organised crime syndicates who imported pseudoephedrine. Officers made a total of 26 interceptions recovering more than 46kg of the drug, which if processed into P had a street value of at least $7 million, Customs drug investigations manager Bruce Berry said.
