Alleged drug mules came via Auckland

Police and Customs are remaining tight-lipped about how drug mules sneaked large amounts of ecstasy through the Auckland and Queenstown airports. Detective sergeant Grahme Bartlett, of Queenstown, said steps were being taken by Customs and police to address the problem but would not comment further while the investigation continued.

International drug ring busted in Queenstown

Police raids in Otago and Canterbury have uncovered a sophisticated international drug syndicate. Queenstown police have recruited the help of Australian and Canadian police after the syndicate was exposed during eight raids yesterday.

Judge locks up 15-year-old for third drink-drive case

A 15-year-old girl has been sent to a youth justice facility after being convicted of drink-driving three times - twice when she was 14 and pregnant. The girl was appearing in the Whangarei Youth Court for a review of an earlier sentence and to be sentenced on charges of driving with excess blood alcohol and driving while unlicensed.

50-plus drug arrests in North Island

More than 50 people have been arrested in two separate operations targeting drugs in the North Island, police said today. Northland police arrested 32 people during a two-day operation, while their Hawke's Bay counterparts arrested 22 during raids today.

NZ a nation of drunks, says John Banks

A debacle around a bylaw closing Auckland bars at 11pm was a policy blunder but it does not hide the fact that New Zealand has become a drunken nation, Auckland Mayor John Banks says. His comments came after he killed planned bylaw changes, conceived by city officials, which would have meant most of the city's suburban bars closing by midnight.

MP wants to smoke out tobacco bosses

Maori Party MP Hone Harawira wants tobacco company executives to front up at an inquiry into the industry, despite his threats to lynch them. Mr Harawira announced yesterday the Maori Affairs parliamentary select committee would hold an inquiry into the impact of tobacco use on Maori.

Celebrity deaths cited in call for action on prescription drug abuse

The deaths of Heath Ledger and Michael Jackson have thrown a spotlight on the growing problem of prescription drug abuse in Australia, says a senior specialist. Dr Penelope Briscoe, dean of the faculty of pain medicine at Australia and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA), says reform is needed to curb the illicit use and sale of powerful prescription medicines.

Drug driving a problem in NZ - survey

Two thirds of cannabis users say the drug does not affect their driving ability, while 16 per cent say it improves it, according to a new survey. Almost 1200 people responded to an online Drug Foundation survey ahead of the introduction of new drug-driving tests set to be enforced by police from December.

Smokers pushed out of the park

AMERICA'S smokers are groaning - or maybe that should be wheezing - under a flood of new measures designed to make them give up. Or, at the very least, to drive their habits from public view. New York's Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, has announced plans to ban smoking in the city's public parks, adding to the 2002 ban on smoking in offices, restaurants and bars.

Child, 6, takes dope to school

Northland children as young as 6 years old are being caught with cannabis at school. Police say many Northlanders smoke cannabis - this week it was revealed that of the 141,000 plants seized nationally in the 2008-09 season, almost half were in Northland - and many parents are exposing their children to the drug.
