Police ready for tests on suspected stoned drivers

More than 200 police have been trained to conduct roadside tests on drivers suspected of being stoned behind the wheel. The new regime of compulsory impairment tests begins on Sunday, the same day as 19 other transport rule changes - including a ban on using handheld cellphones while driving

Drinking their way to early death

ALCOHOL is a factor in the deaths of one in seven young people, kills 3430 people a year and causes accidents and injury that put 80,000 Australians into hospital annually. A report released by the National Drug Research Institute last month showed that, while alcohol-related deaths were decreasing, hospital admissions had risen by a third over the past decade.

Mothers who wind down with a few glasses of wine at the end of the day could be drinking their way to health problems later in life. A UK study has found that half of all mothers drink at home on at least three nights a week. Experts here agree women are drinking more than ever.

Caffeine fears trigger crackdown on drinks

A NATIONAL crackdown on caffeinated energy drinks has been given the green light by state and federal food ministers after NSW findings that most of the drinks exceed the legal limit for caffeine. The drinks have been associated with recent cases of dizziness and nausea among teenagers. The food regulation ministerial council has called for a ''national compliance strategy'' to be developed to regulate caffeinated energy drinks.

Female guard suspected of smuggling drugs into jail

A female prison guard has been stood down from the Spring Hill prison near Meremere for suspected drug smuggling. Corrections Department chief executive Barry Matthews said police had been notified, but the woman had not yet been formally suspended from duty. "The officer who was smuggling drugs into the prison will be subject to an employment investigation and if the investigation confirms the evidence she will face severe disciplinary action and almost certain dismissal," he said.

Men who regularly smoke cannabis may be prematurely stubbing out their sex lives, Australian research shows. Men who smoked pot daily were found to be four times more likely to have trouble reaching orgasm than men who did not inhale, according to the La Trobe University study.

DAMASCUS - Syria has banned smoking in public places and restricted the water pipe, in an anti-smoking trend already under way in other Arab countries. President Bashar Assad's decree, which will go into effect in six months, bans smoking in restaurants, cafes, cinemas, theatres, schools, official functions and on public transport.

Drug gangs shoot down helicopter in Rio battle

RIO DE JANEIRO - Drug traffickers shot down a police helicopter during a gunbattle between rival gangs Saturday, killing two officers in a burst of violence just two weeks after the city was chosen to host the 2016 Olympic Games. Ten suspected drug traffickers were also killed during the fighting in a shantytown, along with two bystanders in the slum, officials said.
