College courier problem 'ignored'

High school principals say they have not been contacted by police and are not aware of any Chinese students from their schools being used as "drug catchers". Detective Senior Sergeant Chris Cahill of the Auckland Metro drug squad said students from high schools all over Auckland were being recruited to receive parcels containing pseudoephedrine-based ContacNT cold tablets.

Wellington police arrest 55 on drugs charges

Wellington police have arrested 55 people and frozen bank accounts worth $200,000 following extensive drug-related busts over the past seven days. Detective Inspector Darrin Thomson of the Wellington Metro CIB said the focus of the week-long Operation Cobra was on drug offending. Officers carried out searches and made arrests in Wellington City, Lower and Upper Hutt, Kapiti Mana and the Wairarapa.

ADVERTISING encouraging people to quit smoking may be making it harder for quitters to stay on the wagon. In the world's first long-term international study of people who have given up smoking, researchers found that respondents showed widespread resilience to cravings in the first 30 days.

Drug rings recruiting students at top schools

Asian crime syndicates are using foreign students in some of Auckland's best high schools to receive illegal shipments of the drugs used to produce methamphetamine. Police believe the Asian students - known as "catchers" - are receiving dozens of parcels containing pseudoephedrine-based ContacNT cold tablets each month.

Drug seizure nets $6m worth of methamphetamine

The seizure of crystal methamphetamine with a street value of up to $6 million showed the seriousness of the P problem in New Zealand, Police Minister Judith Collins said today. In the biggest methamphetamine bust in New Zealand this year, 6kg of the class A drug was intercepted at Auckland airport on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Sniffer dogs searching for drugs in schools

Sniffer dogs are being brought into schools amid growing concern from police and education officials about the escalating number of children found in possession of drugs. Last year, schools stood down 1184 pupils for drugs, suspended 815, and expelled 30, the Dominion Post newspaper reported. Education Ministry statistics dating back to 2006 show rates of stand-downs and expulsions for drugs have increased but suspensions have decreased.

Watchdogs slam cheap liquor promotions

Cheap liquor promotions are hurting the on-licence industry and contributing to New Zealand's drinking problem, alcohol watchdog services say. In May this year, the two big supermarket chains - Foodstuffs and Progressive Enterprises - said they had stopped selling liquor below cost as a "loss leader".

Drunk caught at 147km/h in drink-drive blitz

A woman driving at 147km/h while three times over the legal alcohol limit lost control of her car and drove into a paddock when she saw a police car's flashing lights. The 28-year-old was charged with dangerous driving and drink-driving after the incident on SH2 near Pongakawa, Western Bay of Plenty.
