Toddler sleeps on as 4WD hits house

Mary-Anne Abbott was asleep on her couch when she was awakened by a loud bang that shook her house. The 35-year-old mother-of-three normally shares her bed with her 18-month-old daughter, Kathryn, at their Hamilton home but she had drifted off to sleep while chatting to her sister in the front room.

Under-age drinking OK, says half of Australia

HALF of Australian adults say 15 to 17-year-olds should be allowed to drink alcohol at home, despite official guidelines warning young people to delay drinking for as long as possible. A survey of 1200 adults by health insurer MBF also found that the more people earned, the more likely they were to agree to under-age drinking, with 63 per cent of respondents earning more than $100,000 approving of the practice.

One DHB out of 21 meets 'quit smoking' target

Health authorities want to end the bizarre spectacle of patients in gowns, some with medical tubes hanging off their bodies, smoking on streets outside "smokefree" public hospitals. But, not by asking politicians to ban smoking on public streets. Instead, they want all smokers who are admitted to hospital to be offered nicotine replacement therapy for the duration of their stay and afterwards if the patient wants to make an attempt to quit smoking long-term.

Super-strength argument

Super-strong imported beers are fuelling New Zealand's binge drinking culture and a surge in violent behaviour, alcohol watchdogs warn. Brews with alcohol content of up to 12 per cent are on the shelves of supermarkets and bottle stores, prompting calls for higher taxes and prices.

Teen drivers drinking and driving more than ever - police

Teenage drivers are getting drunk and climbing behind the wheel in greater numbers than ever before, say police. Their regular booze checks in the greater Auckland area indicate the number of drunken drivers under 20 has risen by 77 per cent compared with two or three years ago.

Pair to face P charges after dawn raids

25th November 2009
A man and woman have been charged with methamphetamine-related offences after two police dawn raids in West Auckland yesterday. The simultaneous search warrants were related and police say they will not be targeting any other addresses. A house on Kilgour Tce in rural Huia, Waitakere City, was stormed by armed offenders squad members about 6am and a man was taken into police custody, charged with supplying methamphetamine.

Health alert over horse drug young people take to get high

Health authorities are warning of the dangers of Ketamine, a powerful tranquilliser used on horses, which is becoming increasingly popular among young people as a recreational drug. Some users have needed to have their bladders removed and must now wear catheters. Other users have suffered serious kidney problems, breathing difficulties, addiction, bouts of unconsciousness and trouble with urinating.

Transtasman crackdown on party season hoons

For 48 hours police throughout New Zealand and Australia will take a united stand against alcohol-fuelled violence. Operation Unite will kick off on December 11 and 12 - in the thick of Christmas party season - as the first large-scale transtasman operation of its kind. The idea came from a meeting of the Australia New Zealand Policing Advisory Agency in September and was launched in Perth yesterday.

University's smoke-free plan first in country

The University of Auckland will become the country's first smoke-free university next year.From January 1, smoking will be banned on all Auckland University campuses and outdoor spaces, including places previously designated as smoking areas. In a revision of its smoke-free policy, the university decided the old policy was not combating risks to non-smokers from passive smoking.
