UN watchdog sounds alert on date-rape drugs

Governments around the world must step up their efforts to limit access to "date-rape drugs", sedatives that are secretly added to a person's drink to reduce his or her ability to resist sexual assault and remember it later, a United Nations watchdog says.

Smokers have lower IQs, says study

Cigarette smokers have lower IQs than non-smokers and the more a person smokes, the lower his IQ, according to a new international study. The study of more than 20,000 Israeli military recruits found young men who smoked a pack of cigarettes a day or more had IQ scores that were 7.5 points lower than non-smokers.

Tradie awake for '21 days' after pinching pills

A tradesman stole a haul of seized drugs during a job at a police station and consumed so much he couldn't sleep for three weeks, a court has been told. Tony Jackson, 37, was cutting a ventilation hole in the wall of a police exhibits room at Maroochydore police station in July 2008 when he decided to steal the biggest bag of drugs he could find.

Pilots under official surveillance for drink, drug problems

New Zealand's aviation watchdog says it has some airline pilots under surveillance for alcohol or drug abuse, but can't say how many, or whether they are still flying. Civil Aviation Authority spokesman Bill Sommer said late yesterday that the agency's medical unit knew of "a few" Air New Zealand pilots who had reported their own alcohol or drug problems, or been reported by the airline as a legal requirement.

Saved, and dedicated to helping save others

A woman whose life was saved by Rotoroa Island is now saving other lives on the streets of Christchurch. Gaylene, now 44, was told about the island by a doctor when she was in Middlemore Hospital with severe pancreatitis in May 2000. "I was told that if I continued to drink I had only two years to live," she said.

Police freeze $2.5m cash seized in drug inquiry

Nearly $2.5 million in cash believed to be from drugs has been frozen in the largest confiscation yet under new powers allowing police to seize unexplained wealth from suspected criminals. Detectives executing a search warrant on the Know-All Group premises - a foreign exchange shop opposite SkyCity casino in central Auckland - found stacks of cash alleged to be the profits of drug dealing.

West Coast cannabis haul slumps 42pc

The West Coast's reputation as the second most popular cannabis growing area in New Zealand after Northland may be under threat.West Coast police finished a six-day drug bust yesterday with 42 per cent less cannabis than last year, which was also down 42 per cent on the year before. Police recovered about 3000 cannabis plants, compared to 5200 this time last year and 9000 in early 2008.

Council to vote for Wellington-wide booze ban

City councillors will vote today in favour of a city-wide liquor ban, making Wellington the first main centre to have a total ban. It would mean anyone caught carrying opened liquor in a public place would be breaking the bylaw and could be arrested. It could be in place by June. A civil liberty group says the move smacks of "a big brother society" and will turn law-abiding citizens into criminals.

Low-carb beer slammed as an 'insidious health risk'

Low-carb beer has been branded an "insidious health risk" by a doctor who says it could encourage more drinking and, take note girls, it does little to prevent a beer gut. Diet conscious drinkers have flocked to beers like Foster's Pure Blonde and Bluetongue's Bondi Blonde which make much of their low-carbohydrate credentials, says addiction expert Dr Peter Miller.

Close Up staff investigated over marijuana claims

TVNZ staff under investigation for marijuana use tried to get photos taken during a smoking session deleted, according to people at the gathering. But others who were present say the few images taken don't show anything incriminating - and TVNZ does not have copies.
