Number of smokers drops

The number of New Zealanders lighting up has dropped in the past year, according to new figures. The results of 2009 Tobacco Use Survey, released by the Ministry of Health today, showed the smoking rate for New Zealanders aged between 15 and 64 years was 21.8 percent, down from 23.9 percent in 2008.

Canterbury drug admissions high - new report

Maori in Canterbury are being admitted to hospital for drug and alcohol-related problems at more than double the national average, a new report shows. The Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) is investigating the trend revealed in its first overview of Maori health, Hauora Waitaha.

Doctor slams booze culture

A Waikato emergency doctor has spoken out about the large numbers of very drunk and abusive teenagers flooding emergency departments since the drinking age was lowered. Former Waikato Hospital clinical director Shameem Safih, who last month transferred to Tokoroa Hospital, is horrified at the increasing number of teenagers presenting themselves to its emergency department drunk. Violent crime, domestic violence figures rise

LATEST: Violent crime is up over nine percent, with total recorded crime up by 4.6 percent, according to latest figures released by police. Reported domestic violence is up over 18 percent, but police are trumpeting their highest-ever rate of crime resolution, solving almost half of all reported crimes

Driver nearly six times over legal limit

A Northland driver was so drunk his blood alcohol level exceeded the breathalyser's maximum range when he was stopped by police. A blood test later revealed the man was nearly six times over the legal limit - ranking him among the 10 highest recorded drink-drivers in New Zealand.

Don't drink: message in a bottle for pregnant women

PREGNANT women would be warned of the dangers of drinking on every bottle of beer, wine and spirits in a plan to broaden food labelling laws. First a government-appointed panel of legal, food and nutrition experts must determine if alcohol should be subjected to the same level of labelling scrutiny as other foods, a public hearing into the review heard yesterday.

Docs urge ban on smoking in cars when kids present

Kiwi doctors want adults to be banned from smoking in cars containing children. The ban is already in place in several Australian states. Two years ago Tasmania introduced an on-the-spot fine of $110. A ban in New Zealand would mean anyone under the age of 18 - the current legal age for smoking - would be classed as a child.

UK govt to ban 'legal high' mephedrone

LONDON - The British government says it will criminalise mephedrone, after the drug known by party revellers as "meow meow" or "MCAT" was linked to several deaths. Home Secretary Alan Johnson said he would ban the drug after receiving advice from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, a committee of scientists.

P pipe charge after car seen weaving on motorway

The driver of a car seen bouncing off concrete barriers as it weaved along the Wellington motorway has been charged with possession of a P pipe. The woman, who did not have a licence, was detained by members of the public after stopping suddenly north of Johnsonville last Friday evening and failed the new compulsory impairment test by police, Senior Constable Bruce Pauling told The Dominion Post.
