Children found at Bay of Plenty P-lab

Police arrested 12 people in the western Bay of Plenty today after executing 12 search warrants in an operation targeting drugs and stolen property. One search of an address on Glue Pot Rd, at Oropi, south of Tauranga, found a methamphetamine lab and firearms. Police arrested a 42-year-old male in connection with the haul. There were also three children, aged from pre-school age to 14, at the address who were dealt with by Child Youth and Family.

17 outlets caught selling kids booze

One in 10 licensed premises sold alcohol to 15-year-olds in a sting in the Auckland City police district. Three boys and three girls were instructed not to dress to look older or wear make-up when they entered 162 businesses armed with $20 cash and no ID. Seventeen outlets were busted breaking the law and will be referred to the Liquor Licensing Authority for suspension or cancellation of their licences.

Teen smoking drops 30pc - study

A new study shows a 30 per cent cut in the number of teenagers smoking - days after the Government announced a $12 million reduction in funding for anti-tobacco initiatives. The Year 10 Snapshot Survey conducted by the Action on Smoking and Health lobby group found that the number of children aged 14 to 15 who smoke daily is one-third what it was a decade ago, while the number who have never smoked has doubled.

Slain dog saves police officers

It was supposed to be a routine door-knock. The type that police carry out hundreds of times a week without any problems. Police Constable Mitchel Alatalo, 39, and long-serving dog handler Bruce Lamb, 51 - along with 6-year-old canine colleague, Gage - had no reason to be overly concerned when they were sent to the Christchurch suburb of Linwood yesterday to find a person with psychiatric problems who was threatening another person.

Anti-smoking initiatives hit by $12m funding cut

Funding of anti-smoking initiatives has been cut by the Government by $12 million, with the agency that runs the successful Smoking - Not Our Future campaign bearing the brunt. While the Budget's tobacco tax increase will boost Government revenue by $205 million annually, the Budget also cut $3 million a year over the next four years from tobacco control spending, Treasury documents show.

Mike Williams: Positives of P education programme outweigh negatives

Thanks to the NZ Herald for highlighting the Stellar Trust's anti-methamphetamine education programme in schools with drug educator Pat Buckley. Inevitably, Andrew Laxon's well-researched article drew criticism from Dr Chris Wilkins of Massey University who reflects mainstream academic opinion in this country in his doubts about methamphetamine education in secondary schools.

Advert makes drinking look awesome - critic

A 17-year-old youth MP is calling for a ban on alcohol advertising after saying in a select committee that some of the advertising she saw made her want to drink. Chelsea Torrance, a year 13 at Chilton Saint James School, Lower Hutt, represented Rimutaka at this week's Youth Parliament. She said during a social services youth select committee that she questioned Hospitality Association chief executive Bruce Robertson about the influence alcohol advertising had on youth drinking and was told they were not a target.

Crackdown slashes ER teen-drunk cases

The number of drunk teenagers going to hospital in South Auckland has tumbled after a crackdown on under-age binge-drinking in the district. Statistics released to the Herald reveal 18 teenagers were admitted to Middlemore Hospital excessively drunk from January to March this year - 80 per cent down on the 94 teens during that period last year. Two 14-year-olds were among alcohol admissions this year compared with 16 in 2009.

Paris Hilton arrested at World Cup

PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa - Paris Hilton has appeared briefly in a South African courtroom after being arrested on suspicion possession of marijuana, according to a reporter in court. Hilton appeared in a special FIFA World Cup court around midnight local time. Neither she nor court officials said anything and she was quickly led away to another room.

Doctor struck off over drug charges

A doctor alleged to have a gang association and a reputation for supplying anabolic steroids to body builders has been struck off the register on charges relating to irregular prescribing. Johannes Wilson was understood to have left the country and did not appear or defend himself at the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal (HPDT) hearing in Auckland yesterday and today.
