Twelve year olds 'stealing to pay for cannabis'

Rotorua kids as young as 12 have been caught stealing to pay for drugs and police say this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to drug-related crime. Detective Senior Sergeant Lindsay Pilbrow of the Bay of Plenty Organised Crime Squad said police caught the youths following a spate of vehicle break-ins in central Rotorua. He said four youths aged 12 to 14 were arrested. "These kids had been stealing to pay for cannabis for their own use. This is a particularly sad example, because it illustrates that young kids are already using cannabis and are committing crimes in order to do so."

Charges after P, kids found in house

Two men and a woman have been charged after a police drugs raid yesterday on a suspected drug house in Manawatu where three pre-school children were also found. More than $40,000 in cash, a small number of point bags of methamphetamine, cannabis, scales and documentation indicative of drug dealing were recovered during the raid on the Ferndale Place, Feilding, house, police said.

Fifteen drug arrests in police drive

Police have arrested 15 people in the lower North Island as part of a national campaign against the production and distribution of methamphetamine, or P. Eighteen search warrants were carried out at properties in New Plymouth, rural Taranaki, Wanganui and Manawatu. Those arrested have been charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of LSD, cultivating cannabis, possession of cannabis for supply, possession of cannabis and cannabis oil, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

Cycling: Armstrong investigation intensifies

U.S. investigators have interviewed French anti-doping officials at Interpol headquarter as part of a probe into allegations of drug use by cyclists including Lance Armstrong, a French official told The Associated Press. The investigation shifted its focus to France, with an American delegation seeking information from police officials and the national anti-doping agency that has stored some of Armstrong's samples from the Tour de France.

Sports star tackles booze shop

Former Kiwi and Warriors rugby league forward Logan Swann is lining up against a liquor store trying to set up in his neighbourhood. Swann is among 1215 people who have petitioned against the planned Super Liquor franchise in the Auckland suburb of Glen Innes. Swann, 35, who has lived in the area for most of his life, said he feared the planned liquor store on West Tamaki Rd would fuel "alcohol-related crimes and add to a growing and irresponsible drinking culture".

Student party has top principal concerned

School principals are banding together with police to stop more out-of-control beach parties on the North Shore. A 'Castor Bay Beach Party 2' event on Facebook has more than 1700 people confirmed as 'attending' and 500 more 'maybe attending'. It comes in the wake of a party at Castor Bay last Saturday where police trying to disperse the gathering were pelted with bottles.

Tough law to end displays of tobacco

Tobacco products are to be hidden and anti-smoking officers will get powers to instantly fine shops under get-tough measures announced by the Government. Associate Health Minister Tariana Turia said that Cabinet had backed a package of legislation to tighten tobacco controls. Mrs Turia hopes to introduce the legislation to Parliament before Christmas. Once passed, any visible display of tobacco products for sale will be banned.

Rugby: Fears entire 'Boks squad took banned substance

Springboks coach Peter de Villiers is worried his entire squad may have taken a banned substance that has seen two players fail doping tests. Bjorn Basson and Chiliboy Ralepelle were sent home Monday and suspended for failing drugs tests after the side's match against Ireland two weeks ago. The South African Rugby Union said the players tested positive for the banned stimulant methylhexaneamine after the 23-21 win at Ireland on Nov. 6. The players can still have their "B" sample tested.

Health warning for Mid-East smokers

The growing popularity of shisha smoking in Auckland - and a perception that it is less harmful than cigarettes - is causing concern at the Ministry of Health. Shisha smoking originates from the Middle East, where a stemmed instrument is used to smoke flavoured tobacco which is cooled and filtered by passing it through water. The number of cafes offering shisha in New Zealand has increased in recent years, and such cafes can now be found in Queen St, High St, K Rd and beyond.

Kids living in P labs appal police

Police are appalled by the number of children who have been living in P labs this year, and fear it is only a matter of time that a child will die.Up to the end of September, 75 children have been found living amongst the toxic waste, explosive chemicals, and drug manufacturing detritus of clan labs this year. Last year 64 children were found in clan labs. Assistant Commissioner Grant Nicholls said the number of children found in clan labs is "appalling".
