Tough law to end displays of tobacco

Tobacco products are to be hidden and anti-smoking officers will get powers to instantly fine shops under get-tough measures announced by the Government. Associate Health Minister Tariana Turia said that Cabinet had backed a package of legislation to tighten tobacco controls. Mrs Turia hopes to introduce the legislation to Parliament before Christmas. Once passed, any visible display of tobacco products for sale will be banned.

Rugby: Fears entire 'Boks squad took banned substance

Springboks coach Peter de Villiers is worried his entire squad may have taken a banned substance that has seen two players fail doping tests. Bjorn Basson and Chiliboy Ralepelle were sent home Monday and suspended for failing drugs tests after the side's match against Ireland two weeks ago. The South African Rugby Union said the players tested positive for the banned stimulant methylhexaneamine after the 23-21 win at Ireland on Nov. 6. The players can still have their "B" sample tested.

Health warning for Mid-East smokers

The growing popularity of shisha smoking in Auckland - and a perception that it is less harmful than cigarettes - is causing concern at the Ministry of Health. Shisha smoking originates from the Middle East, where a stemmed instrument is used to smoke flavoured tobacco which is cooled and filtered by passing it through water. The number of cafes offering shisha in New Zealand has increased in recent years, and such cafes can now be found in Queen St, High St, K Rd and beyond.

Kids living in P labs appal police

Police are appalled by the number of children who have been living in P labs this year, and fear it is only a matter of time that a child will die.Up to the end of September, 75 children have been found living amongst the toxic waste, explosive chemicals, and drug manufacturing detritus of clan labs this year. Last year 64 children were found in clan labs. Assistant Commissioner Grant Nicholls said the number of children found in clan labs is "appalling".

Unaware of P lab poisoning

Thousands of Kiwis could be at risk of getting sick from methamphetamine manufacture in their own homes, without even knowing it. There could be up to 2000 P labs operating across New Zealand each year in rented houses and those that go on to be sold, experts say. And it appears many people have no idea that dangerous chemicals have been brewed in the homes they have bought or are renting.

Top police officer disgusted at drunk 10-year-old

A senior Northland policeman is disgusted after a "blotto" 10-year-old boy was found so drunk his eyes were rolling back in his head. He vomited in a police car while being taken to a doctor. Child Youth and Family has been informed after the 10-year-old boy was found drunk and causing disorder on Dargaville's River Rd about 10pm on Friday night. The boy was apprehended along with three intoxicated males who were allegedly kicking boundary fences and acting in a disorderly manner on the road.

Methamphetamine driver sparked chaos - police

A driver who caused chaos on Waikato roads yesterday while evading police was high on methamphetamines, police said today. Waikato road policing manager, Inspector Leo Tooman, said a Highway Patrol officer recorded a silver Peugot travel past him at 117km/h on SH1 near Hampton Downs about 8am yesterday. "The officer has attempted to get the car to pull over but had trouble catching up as the driver by this stage had increased his speed to 180km/h as he headed south," Mr Tooman said.

We're winning drug battle, says Key

The Government says increased hauls of methamphetamine and tens of millions of dollars of drug-related asset seizures this year show its co-ordinated attack on P is working. The second six-monthly progress report on the Tackling Methamphetamine campaign revealed that 25kg of the drug has been seized this year by police and Customs staff. Last year's haul was less than 20kg.

Alcoholic novelties at risk of ban

Justice Minister lists the kind of liquor products he wants to target Alcohol Nasal spray, vodka mouth wash, alcoholic chocolate milk and vodka toothpaste - these are the types of products the Government would ban under its package to reform the liquor laws. Justice Minister Simon Power yesterday outlined the kinds of products he considered "particularly dangerous to health or attractive to minors" that he would ban, in a speech to the Alcohol Healthwatch Alcohol Law Reform Forum in Auckland.

Crackdown on tobacco displays edges nearer

The banning of retail displays of tobacco has come closer, with a cross-party group of MPs recommending the Government adopt the policy to help break the cycle of addiction to smoking. The landmark report of the Maori affairs select committee, published yesterday following its tobacco inquiry, also calls for the de-branding of cigarette and loose tobacco packets, forcing them into plain packaging with health warnings, the policy Australia intends to implement in 2012.
