Medics advise total avoidance of party pills

Party pills containing the ingredient Benzylpiperazine (BZP) can cause seizures, paranoia and hypothermia, and people should stay away from them altogether, the New Zealand Medical Association says.

People with a history of psychiatric illness in particular should avoid taking the pills, which should not be mixed with alcohol, other drugs or prescription medicines.

Drug dealers pay tax under secrecy

Drug dealers are paying tax to "legitimise their income" and claim accident compensation, but the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) is legally prevented from passing incriminating details to police.


A Press investigation has revealed a "secrecy provision" in tax laws prevents the disclosure of taxpayer information, whether income is legal or not, frustrating police eager to get evidence related to crime.

Increasing numbers try to kick smoking habit

A big jump in the number of people trying to quit smoking has been attributed to increased publicity surrounding health effects on the smoker and their family.


Quitline, a group that aimed to help people lose the habit, has registered a 32 per cent increase in numbers calling their service.

Executive director Helen Glasgow said 8453 people registered on the programme in April, May and June this year, compared to 6384 in the same three months last year.

Stabbing suspect held in police lockup

Police Minister Annette King said she was concerned issues surrounding the drinking age kept coming up and she would be voting to have it raised.
