Smokefree push in kids' zones

Parks, sports fields, skate parks and playgrounds in Manukau will soon be smokefree zones - sort of. A new policy adopted by the city council will lead to No Smoking signs being put up in areas and at events where children will be, discouraging anyone from using tobacco there.

New Zealand faces a social catastrophe if hard-core drugs like P become popular with young teenagers, a top judge warns. Principal Youth Court Judge Andrew Becroft said young offenders he saw in his court had similar characteristics - they were male, not attending school and were heavily affected by cannabis and alcohol.

Teen dies trying to outdrink mates

A student who died of acute intoxication was trying to outdrink his mates in order to win a belt they used as a trophy. A horticulture student at Eastern Institute of Technology in Napier, died in March after drinking beer and spirits till he could no longer walk.

Plainclothes officer chased, shot dead
11th September 2008
A plainclothes police officer was disturbed putting a tracking device on a vehicle early this morning, chased in a car and then shot dead.
The officer's colleague was also shot and is in hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
