Minister rules out tobacco ban

The Government will not ban tobacco displays in shops, says Health Minister Tony Ryall. Confirmation of the decision, previously signalled by Prime Minister John Key, came yesterday in Mr Ryall's response to a petition which asked for cigarettes and tobacco to be stored out of sight in retail outlets.

Sprinter reveals full extent of drug use

Sprinter Dwain Chambers said he took a cocktail of more than 300 drugs in one year during which time he passed 10 doping tests. Chambers was the first high-profile victim of the BALCO scandal when he tested positive in 2003 for the previously undetectable steroid THG manufactured and distributed by Victor Conte, the founder of the California laboratory. The former European champion, 30, has since returned to competition after completing a two-year ban in 2006.

NZers first try drugs aged 16-30, study says

People who try or use drugs do so for the first time between the ages of 16 and 30, research has found. The Onset and Lifetime Use of Drugs in New Zealand study, led by the University of Otago, was to determine the age when people first begin to use drugs for non-medical purposes. The data for the research comes from an analysis of over 12,000 interviews of people aged over 16, carried out by the New Zealand Mental Health Survey (2003/2004), in conjunction with the World Health Organisation.

Potent varieties of cannabis seized in West Coast raids

An annual police operation targeting cannabis growers on the West Coast has resulted in the arrest of 13 people and the recovery of 5200 plants, including a number of "potent" varieties. Police estimated a mature plant had a street value of about $1000, but noted that some plantings this year were a particularly potent cultivar heavily laden with flowering tops on female plants - which usually contain the highest levels of THC, making them much more valuable.

No town knows this better than Villa Ahumada, where the entire police force quit after 70 cartel hitmen roared through last northern spring, killing the police chief, two officers and three townspeople.

'The Wrestler' actor who played drug dealer arrested

The convergence of life and art that has brought The Wrestler to the brink of an Oscar win took a dark turn when the actor who plays Mickey Rourke's steroid dealer was charged with being the real thing. Scott Siegel, 34, appeared in court after Drug Enforcement Agency officials allegedly found 1,500 bottles labelled as anabolic steroids and tens of thousands of dollars in cash at his home on the outskirts of New York.

No relaxation on cannabis laws - Dunne

The Government will look at an open-minded and balanced approach to reducing drug use but there will be no relaxation of the laws around cannabis, Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne said today. There were too many mental health problems, respiratory diseases and social issues related to cannabis for the Government to consider legalising the drug.

It was not a matter of gone in 60 seconds - more a few minutes. But a man's car stealing spree which began last year and has allegedly netted him at least 25 cars was not a complex steal-to-order operation but a case of a P addict looking for fast cash for his next score.
