Life for pregnant drug trafficker

A British woman, who reports say became preganant to avoid the death penalty, has been found guilty of trafficking heroin and sentenced to life in prison. The life sentence for 20-year-old Samantha Orobator came after a one-day trial in Laos. Orobator pleaded guilty and named several of her alleged accomplices in her testimony.

Motorist so drunk police took her to hospital

A motorist stopped in a West Auckland drink driving blitz this weekend was so drunk she had to be taken to hospital, police say.
Senior Sergeant Regan James said the woman had to be taken to hospital by ambulance due to her intoxication level. She has been charged with driving whilst incapable. The woman was one of 95 people stopped in the blitz who were measured as driving with excess breath alcohol.

Simpsons in smoking scandal

D'oh! The Simpsons could be encouraging another generation of young people to take up smoking. One of the most popular television shows in history contains a "large number" of tobacco-related scenes, say researchers who watched 400 episodes of the cartoon for science. "We recorded 795 instances of smoking or references to smoking," says Dr Guy Eslick, a fellow of the International Union Against Cancer and honorary associate of the University of Sydney's School of Public Health.

P labs give home owners toxic shock

Home buyers and landlords have been warned to watch out for a growing number of properties contaminated by being used as P labs. About 1300 labs have been found in the past 10 years, and decontamination specialists believe the total number could be 10 times higher. Cooking methamphetamine produces toxic chemicals that can poison the air in a house for years.

Frontline addiction services: P addicts curable if society will make the commitment

Recently the Herald has drawn attention to the damage methamphetamines cause to people and society. The stories told have been traumatic accounts of woe and self-destruction. The P problem is frightening but those who work in addiction treatment say the situation is not hopeless. Methamphetamines are a major concern for alcohol and drug treatment providers and the costs to society of this and other drug abuse are extremely high.

Pharmacists urged to join P-pill ban

Pharmacists who have stopped selling pseudoephedrine-based cold and flu pills are calling on their colleagues to join them in a stand against P. But the Pharmacy Guild says banning the chemical would have little effect, as most supplies are now smuggled in direct from China.

GP guilty of getting drugs for lover

An Auckland GP who prescribed large doses of morphine to her patient-turned-lover has been suspended for nine months and ordered to pay $120,000 in costs. The man died in September 2006 from the combined toxicity of morphine, methadone and other drugs. He worked as a technical expert at the same clinic as the doctor.

PM moves to ban P-makers' vital cold pills

Prime Minister John Key is proposing to combat the drug P by banning its main ingredient, pseudoephedrine, from use in over-the-counter cold and flu tablets. Mr Key's first task for his chief science adviser, Professor Peter Gluckman, is to investigate "whether it is possible for New Zealand to eliminate pseudoephedrine in the making of cold and flu tablets".
