Alcohol shake-up targets drink culture

Any more than two drinks should put drivers over the legal limit, says a report heralding the country's biggest alcohol law reforms in 20 years. "By international standards New Zealand's record in this area is lamentable," says the Law Commission report, which suggests a raft of law changes to curb binge-drinking.

K Rd groups fight bid for liquor store

A proposal for a ninth liquor store on Karangahape Rd has stirred up business owners and residents, who say alcohol abuse is rife. More than 100 people have signed a petition opposing the new store, which plans to sell alcohol at 174 Karangahape Rd, opposite St Kevin's Arcade.

Doped-up mum fed kids In road

BRISBANE - A mother was doped up on Valium when she allowed her young children to sit and eat fast food in the middle of a busy road, a court has been told. The 32-year-old woman, who cannot be named, took her boys, aged one and four, out for McDonald's on November 11 last year, the Brisbane District Court was told on Wednesday.

Party pill pushers fake news website as publicity stunt

A website designed to look like the TV3 homepage has been uncovered as a creative ad to promote a new brand of party pills. Pill manufacturer Evolve Technologies created the fake website, www.3news.net.nz, featuring an almost identical layout to the broadcaster's site, including a "breaking news" video about the new drugs. .

Scientists find toxic chemicals in 'safe' smokes

WASHINGTON: Federal health officials said they have found cancer-causing ingredients in electronic cigarettes, despite manufacturers' claims the products are safer than tobacco cigarettes. The Food and Drug Administration said testing of products from two leading electronic cigarette makers turned up several toxic chemicals, including a key ingredient in automotive antifreeze.

The 50-year-old actress – who became addicted to painkillers after a cosmetic operation on her eyes when she was 35 – has opened up about her struggle with prescription medication, and now believes it was rooted in problems she suffered when she was younger.

A married mother-of-two has told how she ate almost 100 Nurofen Plus tablets a day after becoming addicted to the codeine they contain. The 42-year-old said trawling the pharmacies of her hometown to avoid bulk buying at any one store became a "fulltime job".

Rugby: Ex-Wallaby banned for cocaine

LONDON - Former Australia international Justin Harrison has been banned for eight months after admitting taking cocaine at an end-of-season club party, the Rugby Football Union said today. The 35-year-old forward admitted three disciplinary charges relating to a trip to London with fellow Bath players in May. The RFU said Harrison must serve an eight-month ban from playing or coaching, applied retroactively to run through January 13, 2010. He announced his retirement from the game within days of the incident

Vino is no-no as Italian city tries to cork youth drinking problems

ROME - For the first time in Italy's wine-steeped history, a city council has banned alcohol for those under 16 in an effort to curb drinking problems among youths. A measure approved in Milan on Saturday calls for fines of up to €500 for younger teens caught drinking and for those who give or sell them alcohol. Italy has no minimum drinking age - only a rarely enforced ban on serving alcohol in public to those under 16.
