Net closes around biggest P ring

Nearly $1 million in cash and a prized sports car have been seized from the man alleged to sit at the top of an organised crime ring importing and distributing P around New Zealand. When police raided the suburban North Shore home of Feng Chih Hsu, they found a gun cache of high-powered weapons - including sniper rifles in suitcases - and $5.5 million of methamphetamine.

Liquor licence infuriates residents

Residents of one of Auckland's poorest suburbs are threatening to stage a second protest march after a liquor licence for a new bottle shop was "sneaked" through. The licence for a former fruit and vegetable store at 140 Finlayson Ave, Clendon, has gone to a local businessman whose right to hold a liquor licence was suspended for two years after he sold alcohol to a minor at a superette in Wiri in January 2008.

'Legal highs': the lowdown on a law enforcer's nightmare

Internet sellers of illicit substances and so-called "legal highs" are undercutting street drug dealers by mailing their wares direct to homes, circumventing drug controls. Australian Customs and Border protection is battling to stay abreast of the online trade and said Australian customers - which included children - may be unwittingly breaking the law as drugs marketed by online pharmacies as "legal highs" contain ingredients that are illegal to import into Australia.

Police face surge in armed P dealers

The head of the Police Association says the number of P dealers arming themselves has increased tenfold and is good reason for arming frontline police officers. In an opinion piece in today's Herald, Greg O'Connor says police are "well-equipped and drilled" to deal with incidents where they know weapons are involved, such as aggravated robberies or family violence, through the Armed Offenders Squad.

AUSTRALIA has fallen behind in recognising and diagnosing ''completely preventable'' foetal alcohol syndrome and wider spectrum disorders, researchers warn. The federal government has so far failed to respond more than a year after a monograph - an extensive gathering of available studies - was submitted to the Health Minister, Nicola Roxon, recommending favourable treatments.

$5m worth of P seized in Auckland

Police have seized $5 million worth of methamphetamine during a bust targeting Asian organised crime in Auckland this morning. Five kilograms of methamphetamine, or P, two kilos of ContacNT valued at $500,000, and $236,000 in cash, as well as firearms and ammunition were seized during six simultaneous searches in Auckland at 6am today. About 70 police officers in the six-hour long search.

Children found at Bay of Plenty P-lab

Police arrested 12 people in the western Bay of Plenty today after executing 12 search warrants in an operation targeting drugs and stolen property. One search of an address on Glue Pot Rd, at Oropi, south of Tauranga, found a methamphetamine lab and firearms. Police arrested a 42-year-old male in connection with the haul. There were also three children, aged from pre-school age to 14, at the address who were dealt with by Child Youth and Family.

17 outlets caught selling kids booze

One in 10 licensed premises sold alcohol to 15-year-olds in a sting in the Auckland City police district. Three boys and three girls were instructed not to dress to look older or wear make-up when they entered 162 businesses armed with $20 cash and no ID. Seventeen outlets were busted breaking the law and will be referred to the Liquor Licensing Authority for suspension or cancellation of their licences.

Teen smoking drops 30pc - study

A new study shows a 30 per cent cut in the number of teenagers smoking - days after the Government announced a $12 million reduction in funding for anti-tobacco initiatives. The Year 10 Snapshot Survey conducted by the Action on Smoking and Health lobby group found that the number of children aged 14 to 15 who smoke daily is one-third what it was a decade ago, while the number who have never smoked has doubled.

Slain dog saves police officers

It was supposed to be a routine door-knock. The type that police carry out hundreds of times a week without any problems. Police Constable Mitchel Alatalo, 39, and long-serving dog handler Bruce Lamb, 51 - along with 6-year-old canine colleague, Gage - had no reason to be overly concerned when they were sent to the Christchurch suburb of Linwood yesterday to find a person with psychiatric problems who was threatening another person.
