Warning over potentially lethal party pills

West Coast young people are being urged to steer clear of a potentially lethal new recreational drug similar to amphetamine. West Coast District Health Board alcohol and drugs service co-ordinator Dr Margaret Adams said she had had several reports of some opiate-based party pills being sold to teenagers and young people in Westport and Greymouth. The pills were a potentially lethal cocktail and could be extremely addictive.

Stolen acid enough to inundate Bay with P

The theft of a tonne of a highly toxic liquid chemical used to manufacture P would be enough to supply almost four pipes for every person in the Bay of Plenty. The Mt Maunganui factory burgled of the hypophosphorous acid - which has a street value of up to $10 million - will stop using the chemical after two thefts in two years.

Higher death rate among girls linked to liberal liquor laws

The struggling health sector took another knock in November with news that the death rate for teenage girls had risen. Alcohol was the main culprit. All other age and gender groups registered declining death rates in Statistics New Zealand's latest life tables, continuing a gradual lengthening of the human lifespan that dates back to the origins of modern medicine in the early years of the Industrial Revolution.

Govt to look at tougher drink-drive limits

A lower blood-alcohol limit for drivers will be back on the Government's agenda soon as part of a new road safety strategy. Justice Minister Simon Power said the strategy would "address the issue" of New Zealand's legal limit of 0.8 grams of alcohol for each litre of blood.

Northern beach liquor ban made permanent

A permanent liquor ban on Whangarei beaches came into effect yesterday.
District councillors approved amendments to the liquor bylaw last week so that the ban could come into force before Christmas. The bylaw was tried in the district for a year from November 1, 2007. A proposal to permanently ban alcohol from Whangarei beaches at all times attracted just one objection.

Eight children overdose on mood drugs

Eight children have been taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital after overdosing on prescription-only pills. Police said the children, aged between seven and 13, were at a Flaxmere house on Saturday night when they took the pills. "They were playing together. There was a large amount of prescription drugs and basically the kids got stuck into them," a spokeswoman said.
