Marijuana may raise testicular cancer risk

Marijuana use may increase the risk of developing testicular cancer, in particular a more aggressive form of the disease, according to a US study. The study of 369 Seattle-area men ages 18 to 44 with testicular cancer and 979 men in the same age bracket without the disease found that current marijuana users were 70 percent more likely to develop it compared to nonusers.

Teens prefer nights at home to high life

CHICAGO - Teens on both sides of the Atlantic are smoking less cannabis and going out less often with friends at night, a study of 15-year-olds in 30 countries found. The double declines occurred in the United States, Canada and mostly European countries from 2002-06.

Health spotlight goes on teenage drinking

The Ministry of Health is considering its own policy on youth drinking after the Australian Government hardened its stance on teenage consumption of alcohol. The new Australian National Health and Medical Research Council guidelines stated that there was no safe level of consumption for drinkers under 18.

Half of Aussie women drink while pregnant

Almost half of all Australian mothers-to-be drink alcohol throughout their pregnancy, and some even admit to bingeing in the final months before giving birth. The women who were prepared to drink on were also more likely to smoke during their pregnancy.

Drugs could be McDonald's defence

A drug binge could form part of the legal defence of a man accused of sparking the events that led to the police shooting of Halatau Naitoko. Stephen Hohepa McDonald, 50, was high on methamphetamine during Friday's rampage in Auckland, in which Mr Naitoko was fatally shot by police in crossfire on the Northwestern Motorway.

want their kids to smoke. Toi Te Ora regional manager Graeme Savage Smoking in Rotorua's public playgrounds and popular Redwoods forest has been banned and a survey shows 85 per cent of residents are happy about it.

England rugby prop suspended for doping

England prop Matt Stevens has been provisionally suspended from all competition after testing positive for a recreational drug. The Bath player had been due to fly to Portugal with the England team on Sunday as they prepare for this season's Six Nations Championship.

Canterbury liquor outlets sell to minors

An undercover sting in Christchurch has found half a dozen liquor outlets selling alcohol to minors. The operation by a team including police, council and public health licensing officers, sent 14 and 16-year-old volunteers to liquor outlets to buy alcohol.
