Driver 9 months pregnant nabbed in blitz

A drink-driver nine months pregnant was among those caught in a transtasman blitz on alcohol and violence at the weekend. The 20-year-old registered a breath-alcohol level more than twice the permitted limit, and Sergeant Ray Wylie of the Eastern Bay of Plenty strategic traffic unit says Child, Youth and Family has been told about her.

Ecstasy pills reveal alarming cocktail

Ecstasy users are unwittingly taking other potentially more dangerous substances including P, as drug dealers become more reckless, officials warn. The trend is increasing the chance of accidental overdose and causing concerns for law enforcement and health authorities. Testing of what was believed to be ecstasy (MDMA) tablets by Environmental Science and Research, revealed a cocktail of other substances, including P (methamphetamine), BZP and mephedrone – linked to the death of a British 14-year-old girl last month.

Mum with three pre-school kids in car over twice legal limit

A mother with three pre-school children in her car produced a breath alcohol reading more than two and a half times the legal limit after driving from Auckland to Mount Maunganui yesterday. Sergeant Daniel Roser, of the Western Bay Traffic Alcohol Group, said that when the Auckland woman was stopped about 12.20am she told police her last drink was in Auckland, so her alcohol level could have been much higher during the more than 200km journey.

Police: Tiger Woods' blood results sought

A Florida trooper who suspected Tiger Woods was driving under the influence sought a subpoena for the golfer's blood results from the hospital he was taken to after crashing his car, but prosecutors rejected the petition for insufficient information, according to a police report released Monday. A witness, who wasn't identified in the report, told trooper Joshua Evans that Woods had been drinking alcohol earlier. The same witness also said Woods had been prescribed two drugs, Ambien and Vicodin.

Police vow to hunt down festive season drink drivers

Those willing to drive drunk these holidays be warned - police are stepping up efforts to bust drink drivers and you will be caught, they say. More police and a high number of alcohol checkpoints will appear around Auckland, as the festive season looms, with the clampdown on drunk drivers already pulling in high numbers at the weekend.

We're winning war on P, says Key

Customs intercepted 230kgs of the methamphetamine precursor pseudoephedrine from the start of October through to November, Prime Minister John Key said today. In early October the Government announced initiatives to combat methamphetamine, known as `P', and interception procedures were strengthened.

Drugs will keep coming - customs

The Government's success in combating drug smuggling will only go so far, as drug dealers find new and innovative ways to get their stuff into the country, customs and drug specialists warned yesterday. Prime Minister John Key announced that a total of 230kg of the precursor pseudoephedrine - used to make the drug methamphetamine, or P - was seized by customs between October and last month.

Call to raise off-licence buying age

The age for buying alcohol outside of bars should be raised to minimise harm to children and young people, Children's Commissioner John Angus says. In a submission to the Law Commission he recommends splitting the age for alcohol sales. with the minimum purchase age at on-licences at 18, and the minimum age at off-licences raised to 20.

Film shows Marilyn Monroe smoking a joint

A home movie showing a relaxed Marilyn Monroe apparently smoking cannabis has surfaced, retrieved from an attic 50 years after it was filmed. The reel-to-reel silent, colour film taken at a private home in New Jersey, was recently purchased by collector Keya Morgan for US$275,000 ($378,000) from the film-maker, who wants to remain anonymous.
