Kiwis push for lower drink limits

New Zealanders are now strongly in favour of cutting the alcohol level for adult drivers - a proposal medical experts are pushing. A Research NZ poll of 500 people has found 63 per cent support lowering the adult blood-alcohol limit from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood to 50mg. Opinion in previous surveys had been split 50-50.

E-ciggie may help smokers to quit

The controversial electronic cigarette, which has spread rapidly around the globe in its first six years, may help people quit cigarettes, a world-first study indicates. Auckland University has reported the first substantial study of the device and found it is as good as a nicotine inhaler at reducing smoker's cravings - but nowhere near as good as a real cigarette.

Broad: Detox centres 30 years overdue

Police have been waiting for nearly 30 years for a Government to set up detoxification centres in major cities where drunks can sober up, Commissioner Howard Broad says. The abuse of alcohol is one of the major issues police deal with every day, Mr Broad told TV One's Q+A programme yesterday.

Drinkers' mates targeted in new campaign

A new alcohol awareness campaign urging Kiwis to tell their mates if they have a drinking problem targets the boozy drinking culture in sports clubrooms. The Alcohol Advisory Council's 'Ease up on the drink' campaign is the follow-up to its hard-hitting 'How we're drinking' adverts, which featured graphic images of Kiwis injuring and putting themselves at risk because of their heavy drinking.

Over 100 arrests in BOP cannabis bust

8th April 2010
Police made more than 100 arrests and seized firearms, several thousand cannabis plants and some methamphetamine in a major Bay of Plenty operation over the past two weeks. The firearms included pistols, sawn-off shotguns and rifles. Police used 172 search warrants at properties throughout the district and made 115 arrests. More than $60,000 of stolen property was recovered, including vehicles, trailers and generators.

Cannabis health woes for older users

A TENFOLD increase in hospital treatment for cannabis poisoning or dependence among people in their 30s and 40s suggests the habit has run out of control for a hard core of long-term users. Australian research shows that while cannabis consumption overall decreased during the past decade, the rate of hospital treatment rose.

Number of smokers drops

The number of New Zealanders lighting up has dropped in the past year, according to new figures. The results of 2009 Tobacco Use Survey, released by the Ministry of Health today, showed the smoking rate for New Zealanders aged between 15 and 64 years was 21.8 percent, down from 23.9 percent in 2008.

Canterbury drug admissions high - new report

Maori in Canterbury are being admitted to hospital for drug and alcohol-related problems at more than double the national average, a new report shows. The Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) is investigating the trend revealed in its first overview of Maori health, Hauora Waitaha.

Doctor slams booze culture

A Waikato emergency doctor has spoken out about the large numbers of very drunk and abusive teenagers flooding emergency departments since the drinking age was lowered. Former Waikato Hospital clinical director Shameem Safih, who last month transferred to Tokoroa Hospital, is horrified at the increasing number of teenagers presenting themselves to its emergency department drunk. "

Violent crime, domestic violence figures rise

LATEST: Violent crime is up over nine percent, with total recorded crime up by 4.6 percent, according to latest figures released by police. Reported domestic violence is up over 18 percent, but police are trumpeting their highest-ever rate of crime resolution, solving almost half of all reported crimes
