Ecstasy was developed as an appetite suppressant but was never tested on humans.
What does ecstasy do?
Ecstasy is similar to the stimulant amphetamine and the hallucinogen mescaline and it produces both stimulant and psychedelic effects.
How is it taken?
Ecstasy is usually taken orally in tablet form. Its effects last approximately 3 to 6 hours. Its after effects can last up to a week.
Why do people take ecstasy?
The stimulant effects of ecstasy enable users to dance for extended periods and the hallucinogenic effects make them feel warm and friendly and think everything they see and experience is amazing.
Is ecstasy illegal?
Ecstasy is a Class B controlled drug. Its status is under review however with pressure to re-classify to a Class A controlled drug.
Is there any danger with ecstasy?
It can cause a marked increase in body temperature, leading to the muscle breakdown and kidney and cardiovascular system failure reported in some fatal cases at raves.
Can you use ecstasy safely?
The risks are reduced if you
- Take a 15 minute break for every hour of dancing
- Sip cold water or fruit juice at the rate of 500 mls an hour if you are dancing or 250 mls an hour if you are sitting
- Don't drink sports drinks as they interact with ecstasy
- Don't drink alcohol as it causes dehydration
- Keep going to the toilet
- Check regularly in the mirror to see if you look all right
- Stay with friends you know well who will look after you.
Are there long term risks to using ecstasy?
Chronic use of ecstasy was found to produce long-lasting, perhaps permanent damage to the neurons that release serotonin, and consequently memory impairment.
